Knitting pattern for a ladies’ Fair Isle style vest / waistcoat in five sizes using twelve colors (19 x 25g balls in all) of fingering / jumper weight Shetland wool yarn, circularly knit in traditional Fair Isle style using steeks without any reinforcement. Sizes = S (M, L, XL, XXL) = finished chest circumference = 33 (37, 41, 45, 49)” / 84 (94, 104, 114, 124) cm.

In addition to the colorized main chart, which includes line-by-line color references, the pattern has a colorized layout for each size, showing you exactly how the colors line up with the decreases for each size. Pattern also includes seventeen photos of the process details. This steeking method demands that you use 100% traditional wool yarn. Superwash wools and non-wool yarns are not suitable for this design. I highly recommend Jamieson’s of Shetland’s “Shetland Spindrift” yarn for this project. Spindrift yarn packs in the colors shown are available on this website.

ERRATA:The steek diagram and its note on Page Twelve are correct but, prior to 2/9/26, the instructions on Page Five had you correctly work the first 5 steek stitches as “AGAGA” but then mistakenly told you to knit the last 5 steek stitches as “GAGAG”. To be consistent with the chart, the notes and the photos of the sample, those last 5 steek stitches should be in the same color order as the first 5, i.e., “AGAGA”. In the end, it doesn’t really matter for your finished vest since the steek stitches won’t show, but it’s always nice to be consistent!

On 3/3/26, a customer asked a question that made me realize that, for just the Medium and XL sizes, there is a starting point inconsistency with the pattern versus the Layouts. As of 3/3/26, I have changed the pattern to have ALL sizes start on Column #1 (remember, we start this one in the middle of the front) and that change makes the text consistent with the original Layouts. But, if you already started on a Medium or XL using a PDF downloaded prior to 3/3/26 and would like the Layout that works with the Column #9 starting point originally suggested for those two sizes, drop me a note through the Contact page and I’ll send it off to you. If you purchased the pattern on Ravelry, you will receive a Ravelry message directing you to the link for downloading the new version. Pdfs purchased after 3/3/26 will include these changes.
